WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)- Purdue University Police will soon outfit all of their officers with body cameras. Purdue Police have had in-vehicle cameras for 20 years. The new body-worn camera system will include data storage and be connected with updated in car-cameras. PUPD often works with the West Lafayette Police Department which uses a similar system.

Chief John Cox says this new tool will provide more transparency to the public and more protection for all 45 members of their police force. He says several officers were asking to have the cameras added.
"They are good police officers," said Chief Cox. "We are blessed in this community to have a bunch of excellent police officers. But they do know that they get complaints especially with the climate that we are in right now. So having that additional protection for themselves was important to them. It provides a number of enhancements for the department and it gives the community that extra assurance. "
Purdue officials expect the equipment to be delivered during the fall semester. It should be installed, tested, and fully implemented before the start of the 2022 spring semester.
