Indianapolis police announced Monday the phased rollout of body camera for 1,100 officers on its force, beginning with the department's busiest East District. The move comes after years of pilot studies and officer-involved shootings.

INDIANAPOLIS — Starting today, body-worn cameras are being installed on more than a thousand Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers. The permanent program follows years of studies.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has rolled out its first body cameras for officers.

The Noblesville Police Dept. has explored acquiring body cameras for its officers for quite a while. After allowing officers to try out a number of technologies, the department purchased 95 BodyWorn cameras.

St. Louis Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards said Monday that he believes body and dashboard cameras will help to “close the trust gap” between the police and the public.

The Noblesville Police Department is now the latest department to announce they will move forward with body cameras for all officers this year. “It’s a benefit to our officers, and to the community,” said Chief John Mann of the Noblesville Police Department.
